Description
The writer visited the site to record a test pit hand-dug the previous evening by the landowner. The approximate location of the test pit is shown on Figure 1. The test pit measured 1.20m NW-SE x 0.90m SW-NE x 0.50m deep. Apparently there was water ingress to a depth of a few centimetres when the hole was dug. At the time of the visit the water level had increased to 0.15m as a result of rain. 0 – 0.25m: The topsoil was dark brownish black fibrous loam. 0.25 – 0.50m: Firm (fibres pressed together), mid to dark brown (mottled) unstructured peat, containing occasional pebbles and moderate fine roots.
