Full Description
Ring ditch, circa 20m diameter, shown on NAU Aps ADX 65 & 66, 1975 (S1). 1988: Broads ESA monitoring: arable. No obvious remains. Depressions noted in the field (S2).
1994: Broads ESA monitoring: sugar beet crop on the field. Slight depression in the centre of the field - ring ditch probably sited on higher ground to the N of this. Gravelly soil, well-drained (S2).
A ring ditch of unknown date and function is visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark on Benstead Marshes at circa TM 369907, Mettingham parish. The ring ditch is slightly irregular in shape and on average 25 metres in diameter. The western side of the ditch is obscured from view, possibly by the extraction activity recorded in MTT 038. This is not a typical location for barrows of Bronze Age date and it may be that the ring ditch is the remains of a mill of medieval date, but further investigation is required. (S3)
