Full Description

Two large gold finger rings with interlaced terminals. One found approximately three feet below surface inside the present C16 building, the second found outside in construction of a porch. Building is said to be terraced into the chalk slope, possibly one or both disturbed by this. Reddened soil and animal bones found with one ring (S1).
Possibly Viking ring money, one (from outside building) C9 or C10, the other C11 or C12 (S2).
One ring is 2.8cm in diameter, the other is 2.9cm in diameter. The 2.9cm ring is 96% gold and not a true circule - it is half round and half diamond in section. It was found in a trench for a drain, circa 3 feet below the surface of the living room floor. The insurance value is UKP1000. The other ring is 79.8% gold, 18.3% silver, and 1.9% copper, almost a true circle. It is lozenge shaped in section. It was found with a metal detector at approximately 3 feet below the surface in the side of a trench for the footing of the lefthand pillar for the porch. The insurance value is UKP 1000.
Both rings were found during the renovations to the farmhouse. Analysis on them was carried out by the British Museum laboratories. They were examined and dated bty J Cherry and Katherine East of the BM. "It is possible that these represent ring money rather than finger rings for adornment" K East.
Both rings were loaned by the finder (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S3).
