Full Description
Fritton Decoy. Work by J Ridgard on the account rolls for Fritton 1317/8 found that 76% of the manorial income was derived from turbary (the extraction of peat). Over half a million sods of peat removed that year (S1). Seems likely that Fritton Decoy was formed as a result of peat-digging, as were the Norfolk Broads. Later developed as a duck decoy - referred to as `Fritton Decoys' on Bowen's & Hodskinson's maps of 1755 & 1783 (S2)(S4). Tithes of Turbary and `Askeby' worth 25s 4d in 1341 Inquisition of Ninths (S3).
