Full Description
Site of a farmstead marked on the 1839 Tithe Map and on the OS 1:10560 map. These show a house near the road, a barn, a couple of ponds, a yard and an orchard, and a cottage against the road to the E of the farmhouse. All these have now been flattened, all that remains is a scatter of pottery, brick and tile, together with areas of discoloured soil.
This was probably the copyhold tenement of the manor of Hitcham called Smiths Croft. An admittance of 1605 refers to `a tenement lately built upon a piece of land called Smyths Croft' (however note that an admittance in 1740 still refers to a messuage `newly built upon a piece of land called Smiths Croft' (S1).
