Full Description
Hitcham Old Windmill.
Probably the site of the manorial windmill recorded in 1251 (S1). A windmill belonging to the manor of Hitcham has certainly been on this site since at least 1622, when George French was admitted to a windmill and windmill mount on the surrender of Sarah James widow and John James miller. The mill was held by the Clover family from 1696 to 1789 (S2). The last mill was a post mill, to which a roundhouse was added after 1881. The roundhouse was demolished in the 1950s (S3). The site is now occupied by a bus depot.
