Site of gallows.
This is referred to as `Qualmstowe' in 1251 (S1) - OE cwelm-stowa `place of execution'. Gallows at Hitcham belonging to the Bishop of Ely are mentioned in 1199-1200 (S2). A 17 acre field called Gallowfield was a copyhold tenement of the manor of Hitcham since at least 1612 (S3). By 1840 it was divided into two fields: Great Galley Field containing 9.5 acres and Little Galley Field containing 6 acres (S4).
