Full Description

Excavation to in advance of Stowmarket relief road in area of Med town centre fronting Stowupland Street (S1).
Jan 1990: evaluation by SAU - 3 trenches - no significant features, only 2 sherds late Medieval pottery (summary in parish file by Keith Wade/John Newman).
August 1991: area excavation by SAU. Subdivided into three ares:- A only had a single pit; B heavily disturbed by a range of pits (no dates given); C had a number of discreet, earlier, pits the earliest of which was 11th-12th century. These probably related to buildings along Stowupland Street (one of which was recorded by Phillip Aitken [for SCC Planning Dept] prior to destruction - see separate HER entry). It is suggested Stowupland Street was of medieval date but not earlier (summary in parish file by Tom Loader).
