Full Description
`Martlesham Mill' shown on 1st edition OS map, circa 1838 (S1).
Mill no longer shown on 1900s & 1920s OS maps though plot still present.
1990: `Base of the old windmill' still present (S2).
Site of tower mill and its predecessor, a post mill.
Circa 2001: excavated by Chris Hullcoop (and the Suffolk Mills Group?). The winding track of the post mill was found but no obvious trace of the tower mill and it was assumed the foundations had been dug out on demolition. Some finds were made including some sail shutter ironwork and pieces of ex RAF pottery from wartime occupation (the airfield was nearby). A video was made of the event and a drawing made by an undergraduate archaeologist. There is meant to be a bottle dump nearby.
Area planted with specimen trees some years ago (S3).
