Full Description
Cremation in pot discovered during construction of a new meeting hall on N side of church and taken out, broken, by contractors. Said to have been found on W side of NE tower buttress; a small pit was visible which could have either been the buttress foundation trench or below it (S1). The pot is a large yellowish fabric jar with an impressed cordon on shoulder; the rim is completely missing and the base is damaged (this possibly not recent damage). Cremated bone fragments were also collected. Previous finds of Rom cremations in field to N of church, see CSM 010.
2002: While make a photographic record of a recently exposed Rood stair, it was possible to see wall fabric that had previously been covered by render (both nave and south aisle). A large quantity of re-used Roman tile/brick had been used in the wall fabric, including roof tile, flue tile, hypocaust/floor tile etc. The site lies within c.100m of the Windmill Hill villa site which seems the most likely source of this material (S2).
