Full Description
`In 1880 the late Sir Francis Gooch had a decoy pipe constructed on the broad near his residence, Benacre Hall, 4.5 miles NE of Wangford, but soon after it was made, the shooting was let, and in consequence never used.... It has a single pipe and was planned by Page, decoyman to Sir Saville Crossley at Fritton Lake, and is on the verge of the sea' (S1)(R1).
Decoy is peculiar in the respect that it is built on the open marsh with neither tree nor large bush anywhere to shelter it.
Note : this is likely to relate to either a decoy pipe and an associated (?) group of posts identified on either the northern (BNC 075 & 046) or southern (BNC 077 & 078) sides of Benacre broad, the former being mapped on the 1880s OS map and the latter not being mapped until the 1900s.
