Full Description

Alton Watermill. Shown on Hodskinson's map of 1783 (S1). On Holbrook Creek. Waterwheel with 3 pairs of stones. In 1965 said to be `preserved' (S2). 1973: Mill building dismantled & reassembled at Abbots Hall Museum, Stowmarket. Details of building and archive with Abbots Hall Museum? 1976: Site flooded by creation of Alton Reservoir.
Note 2 mills are listed in 1086, from 1600-1699 and in 1844 & 1912 millers are recorded for Stutton (S3).
