Full Description

Great Whittingham Green. Large former green in the NE corner of the parish. Part, at least, was enclosed by 1646, when a 2.5 acre close `late part' of the green is mentioned (S1). By 1702 the green had been divided into 9 fields (containing in all 67.5 acres) - The Great Greene, The Greene, Hop Greene, Pound Greene, Home Greene, The Long Greene, The Square Greene, The Courte Greene and Borrett's Great Greene (S2). Four farmsteads adjoin the green - Lawn Farm, Olivedale, Wakelyns and Metfield Lane Farm. Fieldwalking by M Hardy has, however, revealed the sites of other houses around the margins of the green - FSF 033, FSF 034, FSF 035 etc.
