Monument record SBK 015 - Battlesea Green, Stradbroke

Former Battlesea Green on the northern border of Stradbroke, extending into the southern part of Wingfield. Marked and named as Battlesey Green on J. Hodskinson's Map of Suffolk 1783 (S1).
Probably part of the 132 acres in Stradbroke enclosed under a private act of 1811 (award 1813)(S2). The Ordnance Survey 1st edition map of 1837 shows a green reduced to the triangular portion in Wingfield parish. There is a windmill mound in the centre of the green (SBK 011), but no mill is shown in 1783. There are moats on the east side (Hill Farm House, WGD 003) and probably on the west side, but there the situation has been complicated by the construction of an 18th century ornamental canal (SBK 007). The green ditch on the west side has been mistaken for part of a large moat in the past.
