Full Description
Snape Race Course. Oval circuit used for racing ponies in early C18. Already in use by 1727 when first local newspaper, The Ipswich Journal, reported on various meetings. Owned by Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, of Friston Hall (FRS 048), to which linked by tree lined avenue (FRS 049). Shown on Emanuel Bowen's 1753 map. The circuit was said to be 1.166 miles in length. Details in (S1).
