Monument record MNL 457 - Mildenhall Gas Works Lock (Old Lock); Gaspool; River Lark

Former lock on Lark navigation. Lock chamber `reconstructed and now has a guillotine gate at one end' (S1). Island, from former sluice(?), in centre of river. Chanels fall, together with the water from an earlier mill stream (linked to mill to N - MNL 455), to N, into river in the `Gaspool' (S1). River channel to E appears canalised - note parish boundary on line of ditch to S here, not on line of river.
Recorded in gazetteer of significant Industrial Archaeological sites extracted from a 1980 booklet entitled 'Industrial Archaeology in and around Norfolk' and revised as 'Suffolk IA Sites in 1980' in Suffolk Industrial Archaeological Society Newsletter (SIAS Newsletter, 115, Nov 2011) where it is described as: Navigation Locks (at both TL 707743 and 710743)[MNL 456 & 457]. Downstream lock was originally a flash-lock: converted to a turf-sided pound lock provided at the same time (when the navigation to Bury St Edmunds was being revised). The B1102 crosses the river between the two. Also a small warehouse (probably, originally a mill) and a little NE the large Lark Mills of 1908 and navigation pub (S2).
