Full Description

Substantial Undated timbers, close to River Blyth, possibly from causeway leading to Walpole Bridge (see WLP 009 for PMed evidence),loated during observation of Anglian Water trench. Details to follow (S1).

Radiocarbon date of 1150 (plus or minus 50) calibrated to AD 809-962 (one sigma) or AD 770-990 (two sigmas) for timber given in (S2).

Trench excavation revealed 6 large timber piles and a few cross pieces which appeared to have been part od a causeway structure. This structure is under the present road and the section disturbed spans a pocket of deep peat. Three timbers samples, which were oak, was submitted for dendrochronological dating. One timber sample had 148 rings, it however proved impossible to match the ring sequence with any reference chronologies. A duplicate sample was also submitted for radiocarbon dating. (S4).
