Full Description

`It is understood that some years ago (i.e. pre 1954), during levelling operations on the bowling green.... A number of burials were found' (S1, p66).
March 1954: Inhumations found digging drainage trench.
March-April 1954: Excavations by Group Captain Knocker, confirmed cemetery and other features. Cemetery thought to be Saxon but probably Med, although underlays Tudor & modern main entrance path to castle. Features included two clay lined basins for melting lead, the footings of at least one stone building and LMed and Tudor pottery, glass etc. Details in (S1). Also note further burials found in 1972 (S2).
January-February 2002: Geophysical, cartographic and earthworks survey by English Heritage (S3)(S4).
