Full Description

Resulting from a serious outbreak of smallpox in Stowmarket in 1678, 51 soldiers, who were quartered in the town, died. The site of the mass grave is known as Soldiers Hill (S1).
"The soldiers were all interred together in one place under two large sycamores in the churchyard, and so many bodies lying together raised the ground and it was called for many years the Soldier's hill" (S2). List of burials mainly Jan-March 1678/79 (S3).
Belfry in west tower, c. 1362-3.
C.1672-3 - spire was rebuilt.
C.1712 Portion of spire was again rebuilt.
