Full Description
High Lodge, Eriswell. Site of one of two former warren lodges in the parish. Marked on all available maps. According to Munday, former rector of Eriswell, ashlar stones from the medieval (C14) warren lodge can be seen incorporated into the modern (according to him, post - 1818 Enclosure Map) farm buildings at High Lodge Farm (S1) or in the yards western wall (S2).
A rabbit warren was first mentioned in 1309 when the manor was valued after the death of Robert de Tudenham who had held it. It was noted as `a small rabbit warren with a right of free-warren valued at 1 marc [13s 4d] a year' (S2). When the New England Company purchased the manor of `Eereswell cum Chamberlains' in the mid C17, the title abstract noted `two free warrens containing 2000 acres and the game and stock of coneys in the said warrens' (S3). Presumably there was a Low and a High Warren, with a lodge in each (see ERL 062 for the site of the Lower Lodge).
2010 The Breckland Society survey The Warrens of Breckland confirmes description above. A site visit in 2001 confirmed that the material from the medieval lodge was incorporated into the post enclosure farm buildings, as identified by Munday. A banked enclosure around the site of High Lodge is marked on the 1905 OS map (S4).
See ERL 102 for Eriswell Warren.
