Full Description

Cropmarks of various trackways & field boundaries to SE of Woolverstone Hall (see PMed), mainly rectangular layout (S1) predating existing boundaries and park(?). Probably relates to CHD 004 to S.
For another field & trackway complex predating(?) park layout, see WLV 012.
Possible Iron Age or Roman field systems are visible as cropmarks of ditches and cropmarks or soilmarks of banks on aerial photographs, centred on TM 19653814 to the south of Woolverstone Hall in Woolverstone Park. There are two areas of linear ditched features, one centred on TM 19243813 and one centred on TM 19853811. The first area of cropmarks, located to the west, includes two possible double-ditched trackways. The most well defined trackway, centred on TM 19123822 may be visible continuing to the south in the form of a compacted surface causing a soilmark or germination mark. Another linear soilmark is visible on a similar alignment to the east of the first. Numerous incoherent linear features are visible in the vicinity of the trackways, mainly centred on TM 19253826. Some of these may relate to modern drainage and at least one of the linear features may be the sewage pipeline mentioned in WLV Misc (SF14786) and WLV Misc (SF14785). The second area, to the east, consists of much more coherent linear ditches which appear to form a rectilinear field system, with fields around 100m by 120m in size and trackways running between the fields. There is a possibility that these marks could represent some type of relatively modern drainage but as this area was part of Woolverstone Park until it was turned over to agriculture sometime between 1965 and 1973 and the site is located close to the river on well draining soils, there is also a possibility that the features could be part of a particularly regular Iron Age or Roman field system. (S1-S3) See WLV 024 for the Post Medieval features. (S4)
