Full Description

World War II anti-aircraft battery [at TM 2765 3616], with associated buildings and roads (S1).
The battery shown on the photograph refenced above (S1) is in fact a Cold War Heavy Anti-aircraft Artillery battery on which construction began in 1946. This site has not been mapped as part of the NMP project (though it is on the HBSMR mapping) but it is still marked on the modern base map.
See TYY 024 MXS19857 for the World War II (?) battery and associated works/structures which were located to the south of this site (S2) (S3) (S4).
2001: constructed in 1946, the HAA retains distinct plan form of a HAA battery, with 4 gun pits placed at the 4 corners of a square. They are partly buried by rubble and farm rubbish but appear intact. There are other principal component structures of a HAA battery, including a reinforced concrete command bunker, test cubicle, radar tracker tower and combined standby generator house and gun store. Claimed [incorrectly] by English Heritage as a Scheduled Monument in (S5).
Cold War AA gun site probably of national importance.
Jan 2013: being assessed for Scheduling by English Heritage.
