Full Description

Rectilinear pattern of ditches overlying(?) ring ditches and henge, STT 004- 005, 007-010. Characteristic of a regular aggregate field system and likely to be of BA or later Preh date. There is some evidence that the ring ditches (barrows?) and henge were visible as earthworks when the system was laid out, since several of the field ditches are aligned on, or otherwise respect them. Field shapes are roughly rectangular or trapezoidal, varying in size from around 50m by 100m up to 100m by 225m, and are laid out on and at right angles to a NNE-SSW axis quite different from both the modern field boundaries and those of an earlier field system recorded in a survey of 1631 (actually in part quite close to the 1631 survey! - CP). Trackway defined by roughly parallel ditches between 5m and 10m aparat run between some of the fields.
Worked flints and several BA or IA sherds were found on the field during systematic fieldwalking (S1).
Note fieldwalking survey (also?) carried out by John Newman (S2). Relates to adjoining field system, STT 016.

September 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The complex of field boundaries, possible trackways and enclosures described above are visible on aerial photographs (S5)-(S14) and have been re-numbered separately as SHER STT 065.
A late prehistoric date has tentatively been suggested for them in the light of their apparent relationship with the barrow cemetery recorded as SHER STT 064.
