Full Description

Layham Mill - SW of village as shown on Kirby's map of 1736 (S1). On River Brett. `Small working mill of red brick with white barge boards & a small square white painted wooden turret surmounted by a weathercock. Replaced a very large white weatherboarded mill burnt down in 1905. The external iron undershot wheel drives two pairs of stones and thre is a hammer mill electrically driven' (S2).
Water cornmill and fulling mill in Layham in existence in 1722 (S3). Earliest date for Layham Mill is 1531 (S3). Present building originally 5 storeyed timber building, largely destroyed by fire circa 1945 (or 1905 - see S2)(S3).
Recorded in gazetteer of significant Industrial Archaeological sites extracted from a 1980 booklet entitled 'Industrial Archaeology in and around Norfolk' and revised as 'Suffolk IA Sites in 1980' in Suffolk Industrial Archaeological Society Newsletter (SIAS Newsletter, 115, Nov 2011) where it is described as:
Late mill of 1905, with machinery from earlier timber mill destroyed by fire. Unusually for east Anglia, an exterior wheel, in iron. John Furlong adds: resident owner, david Pearce, is able to grind his own flour."
