Full Description
Ancient woodland as defined in (S1).
For details of history and earthworks see (S1), the Sufolk Wildlife Trust, English Nature, the County Council Countryside section and various Oliver Rackham works, including (S2).
Formerly called Applegate Wood, it may take its name from the family of William de Appelgar, the lord of a small local manor in 1166 (S3).
Earthworks of an old road running through the wood (on the parish boundary) and the wood banks have been mapped by L Alston (S3).
