Full Description

Report of former discovery of capped ventilation shaft during building works (between 1960-1998?) in rear garden of one of two adjoining cottages (No 31?). Said to have been partially built over by existing kitchen extension when discovered and to be 60-65 feet deep and 8 feet in diameter. Presumed to be ventilation shaft for underground chalk tunnels associated with lime industry (S1). Or potentially medieval water supply (from Horinger) to town.
