Full Description
1945: Cable trench dug E-W in field 1021 (Rearing Field) cut through middle of a chalk `floor' above which, in a patch of black sand, was found 400 or 500 sherds at TL 7285 8304. Included 12 bowls and 1 cup stamped Antonine Samian plus 4 reconstructable grey ware pots. Also decayed bone (S1)(R1). Rest of circa 3-4 feet oval area excavated (R1). Position marked as `3' on map in (S2) and true grid reference deduced from this.
Further patches of black sand with Rom pottery etc., disclosed by ploughing in other locations in same field - see location map in (S2) and map in file. Within multiperiod site LKH 072.
