Monument record COM 032 - Cockrills Farm, Battisford Tye

Remnants of possible rectangular moat mapped by OS in 1880s on NW edge of Battisford Tye (BAT 006).
Further ponds to N may be related to moat or to farm adjoining on E side (Cockrills Farm in 1880s, now Cockrills Farm to N & the Homestead to S).
In 1880s shown as standing water in wide moats on S & NW sides, linked by narrow arm with central entrance on W side. Nothing shown on NE & E sides. Also 2 irregular ponds to N/NE of moat.
In 1900s shown as similar.
Existing map shows S arm shortened, NW arm mainly gone. Only part of irregular pond surviving, and irregular ponds to N/NE also gone.
Hodskinsons map of 1783 may suggest that the larger of the irregular ponds to the N/NE is the original edge of Battisford Tye. A series of properties are shown along the W edge, perhaps including former buildings once within the moat (which is not shown).
Tithe and any other early maps need checking.
