Full Description
Parsonage House; The Rectory House - site of. Formerly on north edge of Hawstead Green (HWS 015).
Said to have 'considerable remains of one [house] erected in the 15th century still exist'. In late C16th inquisition the parsonage house is said to have been well built and covered with tiles, but by 1852 was said to be thatched.
Occupied by (the subsequent) Bishop Hall from 1601, when said to have been 'extremely ruinous' before being 'built up'.
For a phased plan of the house, which was pulled down circa 1853, see (S1).
For location, with associated buildings, see tithe map of 1838 (S2).
In 1850 (Glebe Terrier transcript) the property was listed as 'Dwelling House of lathe and plaster and covered with tiles and reed thatch … one barn and one stable … two Hay Houses, one Cart Lodge, one Wagon Lodge, Stone House and Hogsties, all thatched with the yard, orchard and gardens…'.
