Full Description
Martello Tower BB (site of), formerly mislocated to BAW 137. Built 1810-12? After 'the attacks of the sea' finally ordered to be sold (for building materials) on 4 March 1822 (S2 and Ms in Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich). Tower BB location clearly stated, by Lt Colonel Wm Gossett in 1822, to have been located in Hollesley on plot 440 on tithe map (see copy in file). Nothing shown on OS map of 1838 (others to S, 'Tower AA' etc are though). HER mapping amended to correspond with plot 440 (Sept 2009), exact location within area unknown.
Note: possibly related to HLY 069 & 046 - timber structures within intertidal zone to W.
Tower previously thought to be sited at TM 3693 4302 due to rectangular layout of boundary stones with WD (War Department?) logos (WD Nos 1-4 on 1904 OS map, S1), but probably coastguard/lookout station (also owned by war dept?) only - see BAW 137.
See Martello Tower file.
