Monument record LXD 063 - Baptist chapel and burial ground; Jubilee Court

Baptist Chapel (Particular), with associated burial grounds (one to north-west and former one to east, north of road, now called Jubilee Close. Not known if burials were removed or not).

Grade II listed 19th century Baptist Church. The chapel was built in 1810 and the ancillary rooms were added in 1850. A pulpit was added in in 1897 along with a major re-ordering of the chapel. The church hall is a pre-fabricated building that was transported to the site in 1953. The 1820 building is a traditional monolithic brick structure supporting a timber hipped roof. The wide span of the roof required to achieve a large single volume for worship requires four internal cast iron columns and plain downstand beams. In 1816 the first floor south, east, and west balconies were inserted as fixed timber pews on a stepped floor on the timber structure all supported on slender cast iron columns and bases. The first floor balcony extended round the south side to link the east and west balconies and to face the north end pulpit. The chapel was orientated to the north and to a pulpit and dais that no longer exists. The 1850 extension to the original chapel is to the north and includes the vestry and balcony above and the structural columns and beams to make it stand up. In 1897 the chapel was re-orientated, a balcony was inserted at the north end and the south balcony was removed and replaced with a dais and pulpit. The current organ was inserted on the north balcony in 1951 (S2).
