Full Description

Model Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os Map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular L-plan with the farmhouse detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. This farmstead survives intact.

Model Farm, Linstead Magna is the first lobby entrance house in Suffolk to be tree ring dated. The results of this suggest that the timbers used to construct the house were felled in 1615 and it is likely that the house itslef was erected shortly after this date. This house has a standard linear 3 room arrangement, although it does have an extra entrance in the service room. The building has mullioned windows and was designed to be plastered externally. The original roof was replaced in the 19th C but is likely to have been a side-purlin style structure. The barn at the site appears to have been built at the same time as it is stylistically similar to the house. The dating work allows a comparison of the regional development of different housing styles and the use of particular architectural features (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
