Full Description

Robert Brommer, the prior, hanged himself in 1509 after plunging the convent into debt and was buried in Butley parish church. Earliest recorded roadside burial in East Anglia (S1).
Next year: "In the month of September, that is Thursday in the morning, about seven o'clock, by episcopal mandate, and in virtue of holy obedience, the body of Master Robert Brommer, the late prior of this priory, was exhumed, that is from the sanctuary of St. John the Baptist's parish church of Butley and buried again by lay hands outside the sanctuary, that is in the nearest road leading from the said church as far as the way called Hausen Street" (Dickens 1951)(S1).
