Full Description

Possible site of 12th century wooden belfry 'where the manor-house of Adam I of Cocfield formerly stood'.
Taken from translation from latin of Jocelin of Brakelond (S2) which states "The large messuage, where the manor-house of Adam I of Cockfield formerly stood, with its wooden belfry 140 feet high, was confirmed to them in heredity for 2s. Annually, by a charter of the abbot and convent: the length and breadth of the site and the messuage are defined in this charter." (S2). The siting in Cockfield or Bury St Edmunds are open to discussion as is the translated height of the tower (Abbey Antrobus - pers comm).
Lloyd (S1, 12th cent tower here) places the site in a small field immediately to the N of the moated site (COK 003) (assumed manor house of Adam I) - the reasons are not specified.
Mapped on HBSMR map after (S1).
