Full Description
Martello Tower (No 3), built 1810-1812, SE of Buckanay Farm. 1983: Just off the beach behind a dyke. Brick offset at base and just above gunports. Cement rendering below modern pill-box on top. Condition good (S1).
A visual condition survey of the tower was undertaken with photographs taken. The tower was in good structural order with some fabric deterioration, largely to the coping to the walls. The coping in this tower is formed of brickwork rather than interlocking granite stones. Water ingress was noted. Internally there was some localised deterioration to brickwork and to the heavy timber first floor structure. Water ingress was observed to the west side of the tower where internal running lead downpipes have been removed, which originally served the roof well. There was some damage to an later external render, and damage to the external facing brickwork which had largely delaminated to half a brick depth (S2).
