Full Description
Moat Farmhouse was a late 16th century timber framed farmhouse. It was listed at grade II in 1988. In May 2006, Moat Farmhouse was almost completely destroyed by fire.
Moat Farmhouse was described in the list as follows:
"Farmhouse. Late 16th century with 17th and 18th century additions. Timber framed with colourwashed render and whitewashed Flemish bond brick with a plaintiled roof. Two storeys with an attic. Entrance front: 17th centruy portion at left which has a gable at right. Porch door to left of centre, having an early 19th century pine door of 6 panels, the upper 2 panels glazed and the lower 4 raised and fielded with a gabled porch in front. To either side are 3-light 19th century casements and to the first floor are 2 three-light casements. This portion of the house is stuccoed and grooved in imitation of ashlar. To right of this is the 18th century addition of Flemish bond brick which has a similar gabled porch to its left and a similar door. To right of this is a 3-light metal-framed cambered-headed casement and to the first floor are a 3-light and a 2-light casement, both with cambered heads. Slightly recessed at right of this is a further one-bay addition with a 1/2-glazed door to the ground floor and single-light casement to the first floor. To the ridge of the 18th century portion is a cross-axial 2-flue stack at the gable end and a similar stack at left. Left hand gable end: 19th century three-light casements to ground and first floors and a 2-light attic window. Recessed at right of this is the 17th century wing which has a 3-light 20th century ground floor casement at right and a 3- light first floor casement. Below the ridge is a T-shaped massive stack of English bond brick with a square base and 3 octagonal flues reached by broach stops. Rear: projecting 17th century wing at right with bare ground floor walling and one window of 4 lights to the first floor. The left flank of this has a 3-light ground floor 19th century casement and a 4-light window with diamond-section mullions to the first floor. In the re-entrant angle between this and the 17th century range is a 19th century staircase addition which has a 20th century half-glazed door at right and a single-light window to the first floor. At left of this is a portion of gabled walling which has a 3-light ground floor 19th century casement and a 2-light first floor window and a single light to the attic. Slightly projecting at left of this is the 18th century portion which has a 2-light ground floor 20th century casement and a 3-light first floor casement, both 20th centruy. Projecting at left of this is a 20th century single-storey wing and at left again is a 20th century outshut.
Interior: chamfered ceiling beams and close studding with jowled wall
posts, cross passage, perhaps on the line of a former screens passage".
The building now known as Moat Farmhouse dates from 2008 and is of modern brick construction with machine tiled roof and a datestone bearing the date of construction.
Small scale excavation on site of former (now destroyed by fire) listed building in Otley. Excavation revealed no archaeology. The site was badly damaged by oil contamination during fire which affected preservation of any potential archaeology (S2).
