Full Description
Moat, large square, unoccupied.
Fieldwalking produced a pottery scatter of late Med and PMed pottery (S1).
1993: Moated site and associated earthworks 400m S of St Mary's Church. Wet moat filled by surface drainage is up to 2.5m deep, 9m-17m wide, enclosing sub-rectangular island 94m x 91m, and crossed on N side by narrow causeway. E of causeway N arm of moat enlarged to form pond 60m x 38m retained by external banks up to 0.75m high and 5m wide.
An internal rectangular fish pond connected to W arm of moat by sluice has been dug on island, 11m x 31m and remains open for 23m, the E end being infilled and surviving as a buried feature.
Island surface raised 0.75m above external ground level. House once stood on island and C15 and C16, pottery has been recovered, also tile, flint and limestone building materials (S2).
