Full Description
Moat, large square, part occupied, isolated (S1).
1993: Two conjoined moated enclosures of unequal size. The smaller to the S and probably earlier in date is an irregular-shaped island approximately 25m x 20m, largely surrounded by water-filled moat 2m deep and 7m x 11m wide. Access by wide causeway on W side. Irregular ponds formed by extensions at SE arm and on W arm of moat.
E arm extends N into ditch 47m long, 5m-7m wide, upto 2m deep. This forms E arm of second larger moat which surrounds 3 sides of a sub-rectangular enclosure to N. This is 102m x 93m with moat width 4m-7m, average 2m deep. Ditch is silted but still wet.
Within SE corner of large enclosure is earth mound or broad bank 0.7m high. This earthwork could be a prospect mound from which to view a formal garden in the large enclosure, C16 or C17. Bordered to N by dry E-W ditch, 4m wide (S2).
Note change of NGR from TM 278 713. Scheduled November 1993.
