Full Description

Moated site N of Church Farm.
Part water filled moat. Large, square, unoccupied, immediately NW of church (adjacent to Church Farm). Site of Kettleburgh Hall.
1976: This well preserved rectangular moated site, under pasture, has a S causeway 4m wide, moat maximum width circa 10m, water filled on three sides (where the farmer has cleaned out the silt), silted and bush filled on E side. Moat is upwards of 3m deep to water level and there is apparently almost 2m of water. The recent laying of lateral drains across the central platform did not produce any archaeological material of note (S1). 1981: Site in exceptional condition. Interior under pasture. Moat filled and kept clean (S1).
Site associated with the Manor of Kettleburgh, held by the Charles family, who also held the advowson of the church (S2)(S3). Robert Charles, a minor, held two parts of the manor from the King in 1346 (S4).
April 1994, Revised Scheduling information: Moated site approximately 97m N-S by 92m E-W. Rectangular island surrounded by moat between 7m and 14m wide, approximately 4m deep with steeply sloping sides and evidence of chalk lining on lower part. Earth causeway 4m wide across S arm. Site survives well, in good condition, unencumbered by modern building. For full description see (S1).
