Full Description
2001: Several site visits were made between January and March 2001, to examine areas exposed through the removal of overburden and excavation of footing trenches. All parts of the site affected by development were examined. However following the removal of c.300/400mm of overburden the only features seen were of 19th or 20th century date and all the finds were of a relatively modern date (c.1800+). The features noted were all small, domestic type, pits cut into the underlying sand and gravel and over much of the site the natural surface was not disturbed at all.
2013: Desk based assessment of a proposed development area for a proposed expansion of the retail area identified the site had historically been used for agriculture until the general urbanisation in the early 20th century. There were isolated finds of prehistoric and Roman material with no evidence for Anglo-Saxon or medieval periods.no formal archaeological excavations have taken place within the study area (S2).
