Full Description

October 2015: Stray finds from the base of a water course/stream/ditch running through The Grove woodland in Felixstowe. They appear to have been eroded out of the bank of the ditch, which stands to a height of several metres. The finder describes a yellow/orange gravel layer close to the current water level, which appears to have a lot of fossilised remains (sharks tooth, fossilised wood or bone, shells, belemnites, etc.), but there is also worked flint probably from higher up in the bank. This includes a Late Neolithic to Bronze Age barbed-and-tanged arrowhead, a Late Neolithic-Bronze Age oval scraper, as well as a number of waste flakes with large bulbs of percussion (so hard hammer struck and probably similar later Prehistoric date range) and a single undiagnostic body sherd of later Prehistoric pottery with burnt flint inclusions. There are examples of some kind of slag (iron? Although non-magnetic) as well as burnt/molten glass fragments and what may be hardcore or similar from something like a road surface.
