Full Description

Abingdon Place comprises racehorse training stables and trainer's house which enclose the main stable yard, with, to the north-east, a further stable and feed range and a former blackmsith's shed. Dated 1889 on the clock turret and on a foundation stone on the south-east side of the house. Thought possibly to have been designed by John Flatman of Newmarket for Martin Gurry, racehourse trainer.

The stables reflect the Domestic Revival style dominated by a tall clock turret, the house similar but more elaborate. Minor additions and alterations were made to the trainers house for Alfred Saddler c1920. Additions on the garden side of the house were made c.1985.

The stables are constructed in red brick with hipped and gabled slate roofs. A number of slates have been renewed on some slopes, the house has red tiled hips with boxed eaves and tall brick stacks with cornices.
