Full Description
2015: Heath Cottage is situated in an isolated position on Playford Heath to the south of Playford Road which runs between Ipswich and Little Bealings. The cottage is in the extreme south east corner of Playford parish with Little Bealings to the north east and Kesgrave to the south east. Access is from Playford Road, to the north, although before
the late 20th century the track continued south to join the Ipswich/Martlesham turnpike road, now the A1214 Woodbridge Road. The property, which dates from between 1846 and 1880, was originally divided for dual occupancy and was probably built by the Marquis of Bristol to house his estate workers. The earliest map held by the Suffolk Record Office showing Heath Cottage is the 1880 1st edition OS six-inch map. The cottages remained in dual occupancy until at least 1979 when they were sold by Mr E J Fenton of Kiln Farm, Kesgrave who had owned them since 1959. The cottages, one of which was let to a tenant, were bought by Mr Driver who added the cross wing at the east end in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the cottages were purchased by Suffolk County Council because they were situated on the line of a proposed by pass for Kesgrave. However the bypass was not built and the cottages were let to council tenants until being sold to the present owners in 2000. (S1)
