Ipswich UAD child record record IPS 1179 - Oven 0668

Oven [0668] was located in the south-west corner of the 1998/99 excavation, continuing under the western edge of the site. The width of the feature measured a maximum of 1.8 metres with a length in excess of 2 metres and a maximum depth of c. 0.5 metres. Stratigraphically, the oven cut backfill [0540] to the north of the quay wall and was itself cut by pit [0669]. Only the clay lined base of the oven (0681 & 0691), which exhibited a heat altered upper surface, survived, along with clay layers (0676 & 0677) thought to represent its collapsed superstructure. The ceramic evidence suggested a medieval date, but stratigraphically this is not acceptable as the oven clearly post-dated the construction of the Period II.4 quay wall. (S1).
