Full Description

Probable oven feature. It comprised a 'teardrop' shaped cut, aligned east-west and measuring 1.2m by 1.6m. It had sheer sides and a flat base, both lined with clay which is fired hard, particularly close to the narrow end of the cut. The cut was filled with numerous lumps and fragments of stone (?septaria) and mortar in a matrix of dark grey silty sand. The stones and mortar appeared to be concentrated
in a pile towards the centre and may have been part of the structure although it did not appear to be consolidated. From the narrow end going further east the cut widens out into a shallow pit which was presumable from where the oven was fired. This lay partly within the 1990 excavation area and had already been partially excavated. Finds recovered from the fill of the oven comprised nine sherds of Thetford Ware, one sherd of Early Medieval Ware, animal bone and occasional oyster shells as well as numerous fragments of mortar and stone, (S1).
