Full Description
2016 Historic Building Recording: The unlisted former motor garage on the Market place between 10 and 12 Market Place appears to be part of the same terraced group. Presumably the lack of listing status to this building is a reflection on the loss of older detail following adaptation as a commercial premises. The existing windows appear to be a mix of the 20th century types and the garage has a linkage to the early era of motoring. There are indications of an insertion into an older building and it appears to have been a residential dwelling and small blacksmiths shop in 1841. By 1870 records indicate the property has been developed further to comprise an Ironworks. Between 1922 and 1927 the property was used by a bootmakers and then for manufacture of motor parts from the early 1930’s this developed into motor engineers until the late 1980’s. The building appears on the 1882-1883 County Series Maps and on the historical garage and motor repair data base between 1968 to 1983 (S1)
