Full Description
Base of bronze statuette with inscription to MARS COROTIACUS (equestrian figure) (S1)(R1)(R2)(R3).
The base is rhomboidal with the inscription on the four sides and underside:
Deo Marti
Corotiaco
Simplicia
pro se v(otum) p(osuit) l(ibens) m(erito)
Glaucus fecit (on underside)
"To Mars Corotiacus Simplicia for herself willingly and deservedly set up this offering" "Glaucus made it"
The base measures 75 x 50 x 10mm. What survives of the figured work is the stump of a horse's right hoof and an oval marking the site of a left hoof, together with a (now headless) man, sprawled on his back in front of the hoofs. The scene was almost certainly that of a victorious horseman riding down his foe, a very common image in Greek and Roman art. (S2)
Found by Edward Acton, who also found a rough copper lump with it.
Formerly recorded as MRM MISC
