A wealthy merchant, Henry Tooley, left a large sum of money on his death in 1551 for use to provide relief and accomodation for the poor of Ipswich. A Foundation was set up in his name which acquired the former Dominican Priory (see IPS 830) to establish a workhouse (the first in Ipswich?). It received formal status as Christ's Hospital by Elizabeth I's charter of 1572. It provided relief and maintenance of the aged, the sick, and children, and employment and "correction". In 1574 a major rebuild took place and workshops were added to provide 40 people with work including carding, spinning and weaving. From the 17th century it also functioned as a school endowed by Nicholas Phillips a merchant of Ipswich. (S3) (S4). Polygon denotes approximate location not full extent.
