Full Description

Complex of crop marks to NE, W and SW of Bucklesham village. Complex includes 7 ring ditches (BUC 002, 003, 021-025), several large and small enclosures (BUC 026 & FXL 021 (CRN 10790)) and field systems comprising a large number of linear ditches (S1)(S2)(S3).
1978: Two adjacent small enclosures seenon APs, one appears c. 20m by c. 30m, the other c.10 square (S15).

An extensive complex of cropmarks visible on aerial photographs, to the west of Bucklesham village, reveals the remains of field systems, trackways and enclosures, including rectangular enclosure FXL 021, of unknown but probably later prehistoric date. The predominant alignment of the tracks and field system is north-east to south-west. However it is unclear whether the greatest concentration of cropmarks is the remains of a truly co-axial field system or possibly a farmstead or settlement; a possible yard or large structure may be visible at circa TM23174214. To the east of the complex the orientation of the fields appears to tilt southwards, towards BUC 015, probably a continuation of this system. Two small (9 to 14 metres diameter) ring ditches are also visible (see FXL 052-3), possibly the remains of roundhouses, and potentially indicating a level of later prehistoric unenclosed settlement in this area. It is unclear whether these are directly associated with the field system. Similar cropmark complexes are visible to the north, south and east of Bucklesham, probably representing phases of land use from later prehistory into the medieval period (see BUC 069, BUC 075, BUC 015)(S4-13).
