Full Description

The property known as Basham's Butchers dates from the mid-15th century and preserves the sooted roof and unglazed windows of a medieval open hall. The subsequent evolution of the building illustrates the changing nature of domesstic life during the Tudor period and is of considerable historic interest: the original parlour to the left of the central hall was rebuilt on a large scale during the first half of the 16th century, probably when the hall was floored over and provided with a chimney, while the service bay to its right was similarly enlarged during the 17th century. The resulting three phase structure was unified in the 19th century by a brick façade incorporating a shop window, and a bakehouse and sloughterhouse were added to the rear. Much of the historic interest within the house is hidden by 20th century plaster and wal paper, and evidence of 16th or 17th century decorative schemes may be discovered during any future renovations (S1).
